In our first week we started the lecture by considering examples of old vs. new communication technologies. Most of the old communication technologies that other students suggested were quit unfamiliar for me. However, it was really easy to think about the new communication technologies because they are most likely surrounding me in every environment and I use them everyday.
Further in the lecture we studied the meanings of communication. It was interesting how the definition of communication has been modified as the communication technologies are developing very fast. For example, a couple thousands years ago the term ‘communication’ was simply defined by Aristotle as “The speaker produces a message that is heard by the listener”. In the 21st century the process of communication has change significantly with the new communication technologies, communication is no longer limited as a face-to-face conversation.
The most interesting topic of week one’s lecture was the big issues of new communication technologies. Examples of these issues are privacy, cyber bullying, equality of access and hacktivism. In my next post I will talk further about these issues that often appear in today’s society.
